Growing up in Hungary, Chicken Paprikash was one of those meals that brought everyone to the table. Tender chicken simmered in a rich paprika sauce, served with fluffy nokedli, is pure comfort food and one of the most iconic dishes in Hungarian cuisine.

Although it's not traditionally a Jewish recipe, Chicken Paprikash has found its place in many Hungarian Jewish homes over the generations. Like so many classic recipes, every family has its own version, and this is mine.

One thing you might notice is that my recipe doesn't include sour cream. In the classic Hungarian version, it's often stirred into the sauce at the end. Since kosher cooking doesn't mix meat and dairy, I simply leave it out, and honestly, the rich paprika sauce is so flavorful that you won't miss it. 😊

Made with sweet Hungarian paprika, juicy chicken, and a slow-simmered tomato-and-onion base, this recipe is simple, comforting, and packed with flavor. Whether you're discovering Hungarian food for the first time or recreating a childhood favorite, I hope it becomes one you'll make again and again.🍗🍅

Here’s how 💃🏻

🛒 Ingredients

🧅 Onions

🍅 Tomatoes

🌶️ Paprika

🧄 Garlic

🍗 Bone-in chicken pieces

🦆 Goose fat (or oil)

🌶️ Sweet smoked paprika powder

💧 Water

🧂 Salt

⚫ Black pepper

👩‍🍳 Method
  1. Chop the onions, tomatoes, paprika pepper, and garlic.

  2. Heat the oil or goose fat in a large pot.

  3. Sauté the onions and garlic until translucent and glossy.

  4. Turn off the heat and stir in a heaping tablespoon of sweet smoked paprika. Mix well to prevent it from burning.

  5. Turn the heat back on and add the chicken pieces.

  6. Brown the chicken until it turns white on all sides.

  7. Add the chopped tomatoes and paprika pepper.

  8. Bring to a boil, then reduce to low heat.

  9. Cover and simmer for about 1½ hours, adding small amounts of water if needed.

If you're looking for the perfect side dish, serve it with homemade nokedli (Hungarian dumplings) and pickles just like we do in Hungary. ❤️ You can find my ultimate nokedli recipe HERE.
